ANNUAL STOCK SALE.
The annual stock sale at the Oroua D ;\vu.s has now become one of the nost important on the West Coast. >.t Ffid jy t __as a proof ...of. .the poputrity of this sale, fully 300 persons vere present, from all parts of the district. The weather ;jyas exceedingly fi ne « The stock catalogued com" prised pmebivd shorthorn and Ayrshire bulls, Lincoln Roinney Marsh, and\Shropshire Dqwir purebred ranis, fat and store cattle and sheep ; and a f very superior Ibi of draught horses from the Oroua Downs aud Ciirnarvon estates.: The stock, with theerception of the two-year-old mixed and Bto re 'cattle, was all exceedingly good, the beef and fat sheep/ especially, receiving favourable comm&iti? Messrs Stevens and Gorton com* inenced the sale shortly.: after one o'clock, and were kept pretty busy at it until a late hour m the afternoon. The fat bullock* were the first offered, and were passed m, {he best i>id being £7 7s 6d; we believe the reserve was £8. A very line lot of prime fat cows (50) were bought by Mr W. McKenzie (Barber), and the balance (50) by Mr R.- Stevens (Wellington Meat Preserving. Company). Mr Nicholson purchased, 3$ he:i/ipf mixed yearlingaat 25s < Sd'j ,-46 l hoad store^ cows and 9 calves «ivon m at £2 ; and' 38 head of twoi year old mixed cattle at 3os. Six nuve-pedi»ree hulls wore offered, but only two found purchasers—viz, Baronet (shorthorn) (No. 496. New Zealand Herd Book), roan, c clved Brh September, 1878, bred by Mr John D&tns, Riccirton, by King of the Butternes,(B3 £^)i dam Dai*.y (342 C), by Young Sir Leopold (1 33 C); . -second- dani .Dainty. £1 4St Q)j •by You ug Dover (55 C); third dam, a Homebush cow, ; was purchased by Wirihana Hunia, for 24g5., and the Parewanui Maoris are to be congratulated on their purchase. Mr G. Williams, Sandon, bought.: a! 'purebred -Ayrshire bull, by: Neil Jffleuiing, for sgs. The iat wethers brought 11s, and ewes 10s od bought by Mr Wi< McKen'zie. A pea of forward ewes found a purchaser m Mr Bell, at 8s lOd , and a nice lot of stove ewes fell to Messrs Hnlcomhe aiid Sherwill's- bid, i at i Ba-- 9d. Mr Larkworthy's two-tooth ewes fetched 7s tJd; (Mr Cameron), arrtlf & pen of 558 mixed lambs, 2s. Id |( Mr J, Stevens). A very fine team of 8 working bullocks was purchased by Mr W> Bell* of $ IJalcomh&rat £10 15s per betid; 'chrfiri?- and*gear givea m ; and a few Victorian prize churns also found purchasers, i. The heavy draught horses by President were next offered, and realized 1 very- satisfactory prices. A draught filly topped the list at £35, being bought by Mr A. Lunisden. A very fine paitt of draught greys broiighb'.42gs.{aTiil were bought by Mr J. T. Tennant; a draught filly was knocked. down- to. Mr Gillies for 16g-<., and another to Mr A. Lurosden at ".'ogs. A draught mare, by President, with foal' at fnbi Aif Oliver Cro!!iwell t was pansed m, 20gs. being 1 refused, and a draught gelding 1 by the same sire was also passed m, £20 being Ihe bist bid. A chastnub colt by Oliver Cromwell was bought by Mr F. Campbell, of Feilding, for 21g(*. Several hacks wero also sold at prices ranging from £6 7s 6-1 to £L«& A thojL'giigJibred mate (offered by the executors m the estate of the>LiterDi\ JDiycjp) i was, by permission, subibitied to competition ; a bid of 20»s. was made, but she was passecfia at lOOgSi Taken /altogetlier, the sale was very successful. We must not omit to mention that, bef'oie the sale commenced, the couipany partook of a very substantial lducheon. The woolshed, m which the tattles wore laid out, was very nicely decorated.
