Mr Pell, the mayor of Nelson, left on his voyage for England as delegate to further the schomo ior railway communication. Christchurch, Jan. 15. S. "W. Palmer, a farmer m the Selwyn district* and his wife, were to-day committed for trial on, a chargo of sheepstealing. At a meeting of the Land Board today, it was announced that Government do not intend to dispose of lands m the beds of rivers or along their banks, but it is probable these lands will eventually be open for lease. The reserve of lands north of Rakait for the West Coast Railway does not affect lands eastward of the existing railway. A meeting of ratepayers held to-night carried a resolution by a large majority agreeing with the proposal of the City Council to borrow .£25,000 to carry out necessary and permanent works m the city. Auckland, Jan. 15. Mr John Marshall has purchased the racehorse Turquoise from Mr Vallance for 300 guineas. In , the case' of Joanna O 'Cornell v. South British insurance Company, claim Jl5O on a policy of insurance, Judge Gillies held that the claim could not be recognised, m consequence of a breach of the conditions by insuring the property elsewhere without giving notice to the South British Company. New Plymo^h, Jan. 15. An iinoccumed house belonging to the late ; Mr Gledhill, m Devon-street, was found to be on fire at 11 o'clock to-day. Although the fire had good hold on the inside, the Fire Brigade extinguished the flames. Napier, Jan. 15. Robert Dodson, on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company to-day offered by auflMo'ft the Brookfields estate, situated four miles from Napier, A large portion of the land wag sold at from .£l7 tp per acre. • The coming harbor poll is the cause of great excitement m both town and country, An overwhelming majority of residents are m favor of the work, but owing to the peculiarity of the voting clauses inserted m the Act by the Legislative Council, every absentee and every ratepayer who does not vote counts against the work. •Masterton, Jan. At to-day's sitting, a discussion took place as to the desirability of h&v? ing rituals printed for circulation amongst the Maoris. It was unanimously agreed to have this work proceeded with at once. A letter was received from Tawhaio, the Maori King, m reply to one sent to him some time ago, expressing his pleasure at the step about to be taken, and stated that there was a splendid opening for this work m the North Island. ; Jan. 15. His total debts are £7406, and assets 46021.
