James Service recently addressed Mr Stout regarding the conference of Premiers which is proposed shortly to be held, and enquired whether Mr Stout would be able to attend this conference if held m Melbourne or Hobart early m February. Mr Stout has promised to jjivo a definite reply next week. : In reply to a letter addressed by the General Secretary of the Free Church to Earl Granville, with reference to the New Hebrides Islands, the Imperial Foreign Secretary states that he considers the agreement entered into with France regarding those islands to be still m force. Sydney, Jan. 15. Commodore Erskine, who has been superseded m the command of the Australian Squadron by "Admiral Tryon, has been appointed a commodore of the firstclass, and his promotion was acknowledged to-day by a general salute from the warships m harbor. Hobabt, Jan. 15. The Conference between Victorian and Tasmanian Ministers with a view to establish a mutual Customs tariff is now being held here, but it is doubtful whether any agreement will be arrived at.
