Volunteer Intelligence.
Captain Carroll, of thu Palm erst on North Rifle Volunteers has received the following letter from Major Pitt, commanding the Nelson District, relative to the encampment to be held at Nelson during Easter week ; Militia and Volunteer Office, Nelson, Tat January, 1885. Sir,—! have the honoar to inform you that it has been decided to hold a Volunteer encampment m this district ■ next. Easter, and I am requested by the Volunteers of the Nelson, District ■ to invite yourself, your staff, and officers, and the Volunteers under your command, to attend and take part m it. The approval of! the Hon. the Defence Minister has been obtained to holding- the encampment, and it is believed that the camp will m every way prove a success, Hugh Martin, Esq., of Stoke, having kindly agreed to lend his land for the purpose, the situation of the camp will be all that cqn be desired,, namely, on fine meadow land about four miles from Nelson, and within a quarter of a mile of the Stoke railway station, with plentiful supply of water. ,The country on all sides is well adapted for manoeuvring. Camp equipage will be provided so far as the stock m the Government store permits, and anangements will be mnde so that the allowance oil 2s 6d per man per day, authorised by regulations, will be wore than sufficient to cover expenses- for rations. The duration of the camp will be from the evening of Thursday, the 2nd, to Monday, the sth'April, inclusive. All Wanganui, Taranaki, Marlborough, Westland, and Canterbury Districts, have been invited to join.. A reply to this letter is requested at your earliest convenience, (stating the probable number from your district who may be expected to attend. I shall be most happy to afford you any fnr.th.er , information you may require. — I have the honour to be, sir, your pbedient servant, Albert Pitt, Major, Commanding Nelson District. Major Stapp hopes the ' Palm erston Corps will decide' to go, so' as to have, the district represented. If they do decide to go some extra drillswill of course be necessary to, ensure a creditable state of proficiency,
