Bankruptcy Meeting.
YESTERDAY. At the first meeting of creditors m the estate of J. H. Topping; 'helJyesterday, there were present the debtor and following creditors :— F. : Bichards, £-29 6s 9d; J. King* (Nathan & Co.), £75 Bs* J. L. Schmidt, ±'22 13s 9d ; W.B. Retemeyer, £3; G. M. Snelson, £16 15s: G. F. Hawkins,,£s-16s 2^;,.A- S. Baker (proxy for C. W. .Walkerj/^ 12s 3d; also G. F. Hawkins (as proxy for Henry Gardes), £151 18s 4d. A claim of £9 15s 6d was- also received from T. C. Termant. Total liabilities, £319 5s 9d. The debtor statedlohioath" that one of his creditors: (Gardes) was a sort of j partner m; the business. He lived rent j free, and was. to have, ha<l a share of the profits. .The agreement between them was a verbal one, entered into m June, 1882. The proceeds of the business had never been diviaed-^theyibdtfi had what they required; • > .Gardes had no wages, but was to receive a third share. An account was kept ,of what' Gtard.es had. What debtor received "was ' at first duly entered up, but latterly th.a.t had no* been done. A hqrs,e. and cart which,he had was nse.d hy.. June, 1883, Ha asked mo to take £'2~los a yeek wages, and bring my horse and oarlE and aaid it would; he all righ.t., He askM me to go thn-ds. m the business, J said I would go for half profits if he'wbul^ keep sober. This was agreed upon.. After six months I wanted a squaring up, but he asked me to wait for twelve months. Since then tip to now whenever J fcsked him to square up.^ he would get' on the spree. Six months ago when I asked for a settlement he' told me- to- clear out. Topping has always/had control of the money. He did hot allow me to pay any away..
