LATE CABLE NEWS.
[Per s.s. Te Anau at the Bluff.] (.AGE SPECIALS. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) :• London, Dec. 22. Murray Smith. Agent-General for ; Victoria, has made a formal protest to the Colonial Office against the annexation policy of Germany m the Pacific. Mr Herbert, Permanent Under-Secretary of tiie Colonial Office, assercs that Germany m her negotiations with the British Government, pledged herself not to meddle with New Guinea. It is expected that France will shortly annex the New Hebrides. The Times this morning, referring to German annexation m the Pacific, states that the incapacity and ignorance of the Colonial Offices are unlimited, and that inheritance ot the Australian Colonies has been gambled away. The Times is also of the opinion that the colonies will naturally resent what has taken place. The Daily News myß that Holland is merely holding a portion of New Guinea as trustee for Germany. Michael Davitt, .leador of the National party m Ireland, has sailed from England on an extended tour through the Australian colonies. Haslam Brothers and Wilson, Australasian merchants, have purchased BellColmau refrigerating patents for their extensive freezing chambers for tbo storage of Australian meat m the West India Docks and Smithficld. December 28. Governor Bulwer of. the Colony of Natal' lias hoisted the British flag at St. Lucia Bay, on the coast of Zniuland. It is considered doubtful whether Earl Derby will sanction and confirm the Governor's action, ' The Paris jourual Lie Temps, writing m reference to the , New Hebrides, cou^ aiders- that it will be necoassary for France early to annex those islands m order to anticipate German intentions m the name direction. !
