A young woman named Annie Harxington, living at North Invercargill, at* tempted to commit .suicide on the 27th ultimo by eating " Rough on Bats," spread on bread and butter. She took a dose sufficient to kill, but told a neigh-, bor what she had done, and was removed to the hospital, where emetics were successfully administered, the woman had recovered sufficiently to appear iv Court to-day, and was committed for trial. Domestic troubles are believed to be the cause of the rash act. Dunedin, Jan. 3. The first case under the Police Offences Act was tried to-day, the charge being one of using obscene language. The case beiug first under the Act, the offender was lot off with twenty-four hours' imprisonment. But intimation was given that future cases would be dealt with as intended by the Act which fixed the penalty at a maximum of twelve months, without the option of a fine. The principal business to come before the Presbyterian Synod this year will be the; consideration ' of the question of union with the Northern Church. At the inquest on the body of the little boy Finlay, a verdict of found drowned was returned.
