It is understoood that parleying will be initiated with England with a view to the cession of tho New Hebrides to France. The meat ex steamer Elderslie is m excellent condition. The German Government gave Lord Derby a pledge that they would not annex the northern portion of New Guinea. Mr Murray Smith, Agent- General for Victoria is inquiring whether the English Government intend to recognise Buch annexation. Tho English Government have not annexed E'Entrecasteaux Islands. The Trust and Agency Company of Australia has authorised the issue of 25,000 additional shares. Mr Michael Davitt has started on a visit to Australia. The Times states that the hesitation shown by Lord Derby m dealing with questions relating to the Pacific deserves the severest censure. Dec. 24. The Democratic section m the United States Senate will not endorse the action of America m reference to the construction of a Nicaragua canal. Adolpha Taeuel has been appointed Austrian Consul at Adelaide, and Ernest Moon as Consul for Costa Rica at Sydney. The English Press strongly sympathise' with Australia m reference to the annexation of the northern portion of New Guinea by Germany. The territory annexed m New Guinea by Germany will extend northward from Huon Gulf, on the eastern coast. Capetown, Dec. 23. Telegrams from Pretoria state that the Transvaal Government have despatched an officer (?) to the frontier m order to prevent the Boers who have formed parties with the object of raiding the adjoining native lands, from crossing the border. Cairo, Dec. 24. Intelligence has been received from Dongola that 64 whale boats, conveying troops to the front, have arrived at Korti (on the Nile, and near Ambukol) where the concentration of troops is rapidly proceeding. The Mudir of Dongola telegraphs that a Bedouin from the village of Omdermon, near Khartoum, which place he left on the 9th instant, has arrived at Dongola, and reports that the. Mahdi has sent seven corps to reinforce bis arms at Berber against the approach of the British troops under Lord Wolseley on that town.
