A Callant Rescue.
« Hugh McGloin, settler, and a miner named Bannister, had a narrow escape .Ivotn being drowned m the Parincalliver. Hokitika, on Sunday last. McGloin and Bannister attempted to cross the river on horseback near the beach during a flood. They had got half-way across when the horse had to swim. Bannister then lost his hold and got washed off. McGloin attempted to catch him, and m the struggle got a severe blow from, the horse which completely stunned him. When he came to himself he saw his horse on the bank and Bannister going out with the tide. Being a. good swimmer, McGlorn made down r stream and came up with 'the drowning man, who clutched him firmly round the middle. McGloin made a desperate effort to get clear, and at last succeeded. Ho .then .assisted Bannister with one arm and swam with the other. In this way they both reached, land, nothing the wor.se for their ducking, except that McGloin had an ugly' mark from the effects of the kick from the horse while m the water. As Bannister could not swim lie must have been drowned had not MeQloin gone to Jus, rescue. .
