NOTES ON CURRENT
<» Says t.ho Tiranru Herald — If the word of the Wellington specials is to be taken for gospel — which' is' entirely a matter of individual choice — Sir Jnlius Yogel has hit on a scheme of Civil Sorvice reform that is calculated to \je intensely popular at the seat of Government, the. only scheme of Civil Service reform that ever was popular at the seat of Government. One of the main causes of discontent m the Empire City for a long time past has been thq unwillingness of the young men m the Civil Service to marry. Society has spoilt, them. They got so much pleasant female society without any of the charges or responsibilities of matrimony, that they have given up all idea of changing their condition, and it is unanimously voted •' bad form, by Jove, don't-cher-know," for a "fellah" to be engaged. The dear little warm hearted-girls whp used to look' on the Civil Scvice as their peculiar domain, and whose mission m life was to possess a six-roomed cottage wtih a well bred clerk and £300 a-year, now pine m solitude, and often go through a whole party and never get. a dance. The thing has become serious aud public opiuion is thoroughly aroused. Sir Julius Yogel has seized the opportunity with characteristic adroitness. He has revived the question of Civil Service reform, and has* let it be known through tho customary inspired Jiauncls, that by way of a beginning eveiy unmarried clerk' in the Treasury— where the best-look-ing and most eligible ones abound — will be dispensed with at the end of the year. The result, we learn, is that fourteen proposals, which were considered hopeless, have been made already, aud ever so many more are on the tapis ; and the girls — especially those on the gushing side of thirty— all say Sir Julius Vpgel is the darlingest duck of a Mm isrer, and they only hope he will go on reforming the Civil Service till there isn't a bachelor left m Wellingtons iTalk abotu popularity? Sir Julius . • Yogel knows a thing or two. He wasn't born yesterday, bless you!'
