School Committee.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Committee was held last evening. Present, Messrs Leary (chair), Hawkins, Wright, Woodroofe, Stewart, and George. Tht minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman then read a hitter he had written to the Board acknowledging receipt of capitation for last quarter, also rent owing for use of English church schoolhouse, and also calling attention to head masters last report re set oi contiuent maps required and MerGator's Projection. Letter read from the Board stating that as there was a falling off m the atteudance a truant inspector be appointed, cost to be defrayed by board according to scale. Letter read from Mr Hammond, Feilding stating he had been appointed to the position of truant inspector there and asking the same appointment at Palmerston. Proposed by Mr Woodroofe, seconded by Mr Hawkins — That the appointment of tiuant inspector be left m abeyance for the preseut. Referring to the infant room requisites required, it was stated Mr Watson would make out a detailed list of such. A letter was read from the Board stating that as it was required by an order m council that each Board appoint an auditor or auditors to audit the various school committees accounts, this committee recommend some person competent and -willing to undertake the task and. state fee (if any) which he would require. Proposed by Mr Wright, seconded by Mr Woodroofe and carried — That Mr Watson be nominated by this Committee as auditor of the Committee accounts for the current year. The following report from the headmaster of the Central School was then read. CENTRAL SCHOOL. Sir, — Average roll 316, average attendance 213*8. Admitted 14 scholars, marked as left, 7 scholars. The timber m the girls' yard over the pit, having decayed, -two large and dangerous holes are exposed, which require re-covering.' 1 should also like a man to be employed for a few hours m cutting down docks, thistles, and other large weeds growing at the foot of the fence. Waste paper baskets are required m each room, as the Inspector objects to paper, notes, excuses, &c\, being thrown m the fireplaces. The Wanganui schools are supplied with them. I should also like 4 easels, made on a model of my own design, which would be light, portable, aud cheap, costing about 5s each, and save the wear and tear of maps, — Francis E. Watson. Resolved—That the Chairman and Secretary attend to the requirements m the above report. The following report from the Terrace End School was also read. TERRACE END SCHOOL. Siß,--The report of the Terrace End School for the month of November is as follows :— Admitted during month boys, 2 ; girls, 5 ; withdrawn boys. 2 ; girls, 5 ; roll number boys, 53 ; girls, 65 ; average attendance boya, 36*9 ; girls, 436 ; highest attendance boys, 44 ; girls, 46. I beg to ask that we may have window blinds, (on oue side at least,) and also if the matter of ink vrells has been forgotten. — M. A. Harvey. Resolved —That the Chairman and Secretary attend to requirements m repert, i Proposed by Mr Stewartj seconded by j Mr Hawkins and carried— That the Chairman apply to the Board for the necessary arrangements re school at ] Terrace End as the term for use of Deard's Hall is now nearly up. Resolved — That notice be given to the present caretaker that after the end of this month his services should not be required audthat applications for the office be invited; Mr Watson to draw up specifications of work required. Letter from the Board read intimating that the December meeting of the Board will be held on Monday the 22nd iust.j also that the midsummer holidays commence on same date to end on the 25th January 1885, and that the office of the Board will be closed from December 23rd to January 9tnV Letter from Board read stating that reply to letter received tUe following maps had been ordered. One each Eastern and Western Hemisphere, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and Mercator's Projection. Letter read from H. I. Jones, stating part of above forwarded and balance to ■ be sent m a few days. Letter read from Secretary to Board apologising for mistake m Mr Verms account and suggesting that another account be sent m. Accounts passed for payment F. W. Venn, £1 19s ; A. Ferguson, 3s 4d. Resolved— That the Committee meet this day week to consider the annual report. . ; The meeting then adjourned. TRUANT INSPECTORS. (Extract from Education Board Report.) The following regulations, drawn up by the secretary, were adopted with regard to the appoint- ; ment of truant inspectors :— Ist. 1 That committees wishing to employ truant inspectors shall apply to the board for permission to do so. 2ud. That a monthly return shall be sent to the oifice of the board from each schoo.l where a truant inspector is employed. 3rd, That the increase will be calculated upon the monthly return as from the Ist to the 31st of each month. 4th. That payment to truant inspectors shall be made according to scale, and shall be computed upon the increased average atceudance as follows, vis;. .* In schools of 150 aud over, upon an increase of not less than 15 monthly and upon no intermediate number ; m schools of 75 and under 150, upon an increase of ten and upon no intermediate number ; m schools under 75 upon an increase of 5 and no intermediate number. sth. The scale of payment shall be as follows : On an increase of the first 5, 10, or 15 pupils, 7d each ; on au increase of the second 5, 10, or 15|pupiis, lOd eack; on an increase of the third 5, 10, or 15 pupils, Is 3d each ; on an increase of the fourth 5, 10, or 15 pupils, 2s each ; and 2s 6d each for every additional scholar, with the addition of a bonus of £1 per month for schools of 150 and over, and 10s per month for schools tinder 150, provided the attendance of the previous month is maintained, m addition to the payment according to scale for any further increase.— A.
