THE UNEMPLOYED.
The cry, of the unemployed, which for some considerable time has Ibeen sorely agitating the SbiitK Island, has begun to be heard m tjie nreportedj prosperous regions of Auckland. - Can it be that our friends m the North are beginning to feeltfiG reaction which generally! follows upon a period of false pros*; [ perity engendered by undu6 speculation either m land or building,? The New Zealand Herald, m an article on the subject, . says it is not inclined to attach any serious ihiportfince"to the matter at present, , but js ojp opinion that even the feet' of seventy men being unable to find i epiplqyrt?ent ; deserves- public attention. After referring to the constant practice m the South of appealing to the Government for aid m such j (ttisesv the Herald , says :— Large
sums of money -aye steadily being spent m this way m Dunedin and Christchurch, and to the BXtent that may be necessary the claim for' a proportionate, amount being distributed m Auckland ought surely to be'helclas valid.* If the exigency of our working classes has' not' hitherto been so great, that certainly is much to be thankful for ; but m go far as it may ?npw-t»xissj is no reason Why it should Mot^i'ml---larly receive official recognition.
