Plaintiff claimed £280, amount of pplicy on a house desti*oyed by fire lust March. The defence that defendant fraudulently represented the building to bo worth .£4OO, whereas ifc was albged to be only worth £60, and the dwelling was wilfully hurried by sbme p«rson, with the connivance of plaintiff. The jury disagreed, arid ultimately a Yevdict of three-fourths was taken. It was for the plaintiff, damages £200 with costs. The Wo/ Byrne,, who fell from his horse at. Takaka and was dragged some distance owing to his foot catching m a stirrup, has succumbed to his injuries. Dunedin, Nov. 4. At the Police Court, "Doctor" Tuke was committed for forgery. This is the new chum, who pretended to be a doctor, and was actually acting as house surgeon m Dunedin hospital for a lime. The Wesleyan Session be;gan' to-day.' Nine persons weve charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court this mmning with aiding and abetting cock-fighting at Mavsden on 'the 7th of October, Counsel fop the defence raised several technical objections, one of which was held to be 'fatal* and the case was dismissed. The magistrate commented m several terms upon the case, and hoped that the disgrace and exposurse would prove sufficient to proveul any farther exhibitions of the kind. He directed that no further proceedings should be taken m the matier. Hawera, Nov. 5. At the police court fhis morning, George Hellier, market gardener, was charged" on the information of the deputy official assignee, trustee m the eefcate.of Fred Wallis, with stealing .£4:00 the property of the said Wallw. The money was lost some weeks ago, including a LI OO note. The note was paid into the bank at New Plymouth by the accused and so the charge was traced to hiria. The case has been remanded for a week.
