The San Francisco Argonaut describes how' the archdeacon of an Australian colony on one occasion going up country fell m with a Yankee merchant, with whom he became quite friendly, and they re freshed themselves together several times during the day. At the halting place for the night the Yankee— who had no idea* of his companion's real calling, his travelling costume giving no indication of it— put the question which had for hours been burning within him, *' Going up to mine or trade?" "Oh, neither," replied tho reverend gentleman, '» I am Archdeacon of Victoria.' «| The deuce you are,'.' ejaculated the astonished Yankee ; " take another drink ?"
