Whilst playing about a canoe in the Waikato River, a boy named Harold Broom, ag d 7, fell into the water, but was pluckily rescued by a little girl named Martha Davis, who. was in the cauou at the time. On the boy rising :to the surface she caught him by the hand, and held him above water until assistance came. At the Supreme Court session Frederick Owen was sentenced to four years for forgery. A blacksmith named Michael Hefferson was kicked about the head in a stable by a horse. Hefferson now lies in the hospital in a critical condition. The City Council have accepted a tender for the re-erection of the smallpox hospital. ' Ross, Oct. 3. Immense enthusiasm has been caused .by lcwt of quartz just brought to town from the VVitliaiu Tell Company's mine, Cedar Creek, obtained from a shot in a winze 24ft deep, in consequence of which scrip has advanced very consider- j ably. ■■■-■■: '*-
