Address of Bisop Cowie.
(UNITED PBKSS ASSOCIATION.) Aucklavd, October 1. The Dio«?esan Synod was opened today by an inaugural address by Bishop Cowie. Referring to the question of religious teaching m State schools, his Lordship said :— "Tt is my firm conviction that but for the mutual jealousy pf a comparatively small number of the population, the same willingness of parents that their children' should receive re\igio.Hß instruction m the GovernmenC schools would be found'to ex^ ist throughout the colonies of Australasia. The readiness of a small minority of tho population to withold'from their own children the religious teaching that they approve, lest the majority should have their children taught that which j they also prefer, i an instance of the illiberality and tyranny of the so-called • ( unsectarian' party. Their action is scarcely compatible with the Gospel rule ' To dp to others as yon would they should do to yon,' and it has been compared not inaptly to the advice by the false mother m the Judgment of Solomon, who preferred the death of the child to leaving her rival m contented possession of her own.
