Our informant reckons that those slips are rather a blessing than otherwise as the necessity of clearing them away widens the road. , Mr G. M. Our (ChranicU) obituary notices contain the announcement of the death of Mr Thomas .'Higgle, one of the ,pione(«r settlers of this province. . The deceased gentlemen arrived m Wellington m 1841, by the ship Olympus, the late Dr Featherston, of Wellington, and Mr Thos. Scott, of Rangitikei, being fellow passengers. Very soon after his arrival Mr Higgle was engaged by the Government to build the barracks at Mount Cook, Wellington, arid Poririia,' and also the stockadeon Rutland Hill, Wnngnnui. The present and former bridge at T«rakina was also built by him. Deceased afterwards purchased the steamer Prince Alfred, which was at the time stranded on t)te south spit and successfully launched her. He also built and launched several other vessels here. He subse-. quently settled oh land and was the first to take cattle on to theManawatu Block. Deceased. was a much respected resident of this district m which he has resided ever since his arrival m 1848. He ' leaves a large family of grown up sons and daughters. . ■ .
