A half-caste named Win Smith was committed for trial at Hgavuawuhia o:i a charge of indecent assault on a girl of 7 years of ago. ' Wellington, This Day. A man named Herbert Hawk was drowned while crossing the Waiohine river between Greytown and Masterton. He was driving a horse and carb across the river about 9 o'clock on Saturday night when he was swept away. The horse was found dead next morning with the cart attached. Hawk leaves a wife and four children. ■ Wellington, Sept. 27. His» Excellency the Governor .will preside at a meeting short lv to be held m reference to the formation of a Wellington society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. .
