Oamaru, August 13^ : At a meeting of the Jockey Club held yesterday, it was resolved to disqualify the owners of horses who had not paid arrears of sweepstakes, and also the horses of suoh owners engaged m the races. It was decided to forward the names of the owners and horses to other jockey clubs. Christchurch. August 13. The Canterbury Bowling Club have appointed a committee to ascertain what members are willing; to go to Melbourne for the Intercolonial Match. Judgment was given to-day for the defendant m Barker v. Weld, a case arising out of a. fraud of Alfred Thompson, the absconding solicitor, who had borrowed from the defendant £1000 on a property for tbe plaintiff, with the understanding that he was to pay off the first mortgage of £300. Thompson had paid off £200 to the mortgagor, but neglected to release the first mortgage, and appropriated the money to his own use. The question was whether the plaintiff or the defendant should (suffer the loss The plaintiff will appeal. The Secretary of the Salvation Army headquarters denies the statement of the Press A»sociation from Dunedin as to proceedings re the Beddingfield scaudal. Dunediv, August 13. At a meeting of Bible-in-Schools Association to-day, attended by about forty persons, the following resolutions were carried :— " That this meeting aie of opinion that every effort should be made for increasing 1 the membership of the Bible-in Schools Association with a view to exciting a greater interest m its objects throughout the community." "That this conference request the council to prepare a petition for presentation to Parliament to take steps, and to have the same circulated throughout this provincial district for signature by the electors." Blenheim, August 13. The Wairu Hunt Club, recently established here with an extensive list of members, has determined to establish a pack of beagles, and eight dogs are alread7 promised as presents. Auckland, August 13. The New Zealand Frozen Meat Company have declared an 8 per cent, dividend. New Plymouth, August 14. The Natives -who passed through the town on Monday from Parihaka, went as far as Mangaone, where they had a meeting. They returned again this morning for Parihaka, spending several hours m New Plymouth. The steamer Irishman, engaged m bringing coal from Mokau mines, got adrift and floated to the mouth of the river, where it was broken up m the surf.
