LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Aliens resident m this district and who have have not been naturalized should take the necessary steps at once to place themselves on an equal footing with natural-born subjects. The clerk of the Court informs us there are now' to 'his knowledge on the roll some 200 • names, of aliens living m this district who have never even taken the trouble to procure the leg&l title to naturalization. The roll is bow being purged of all such names, and those persons wishing to have their naineaqn_the now -roll should procure and fill m the necessary forms at the court house. The whole cost of the affair amounts to 10s m all, including affidavits. The clerk of the Court will give any further information required. If the Act affecting foreigners residin New Zealand was stingentl yenforced, numbers of unnaturalized settlers would find themselves m rather an awkward position. We believe the law regarding aliens not naturalized prohibits them from acquiring or holding, m their own right, property real or personal m any shape or form, It is reported on good authority ( says the Hawera Star) that Mr Mitohelson, m reply to a* telegram, has absolutely denied the statement made by Mr Watt at Wanganui, to the effect that he would Btand or fall by the Martoc route. The B.s. Wakatipu, which arrived at Wellington on Thursday from the South, brought up 116 horses and 22 head of cattle, whioh ure being shipped to Sydney. Sir George Grey, Mr Stout, and several other leading Opposition members are expected to arrive m Wellington on Monday next, when it is probable that a conference will be held to determine on the course to be adopted when Parliament meets. ... The extra session will be a regular windfall for some of the impecunious gentlemen who have been returned to the House again. Four hundred and twenty pounds sterling, yo gods ! Think on it, dream on it, dear ratepayers. Mr Liddei, the agent of the Tui, yesterday morning received a telegram stating that the steamer Tui lost her rudder off the bar on Thursday. We (Foxton paper) learns that the Jane Douglas was ahead of the Tui at the time of the mishap, and the latter whistling the Jano Douglas at ouce returned to the other vessel. Other particulars have pot transpired, but probably, the two vessels ran down tho coast together, as they both arniyod all safely on Friday morning. Whilst the Tui is being r«paired, the Huia will make a trip to Foxtqh, tho Stormbird runuing to Wanganui 4n plapo of the other packet. According to, the Fpxton paper, a eon of Mr W. Reeve, of Foxton, has picked up an ocean waif on the boach between Ohau and Horowhenua. Whilst riding along he noticed a bottle having a u'uinber ot barnacles on it, and seeing that it was tightly corked, ho dismounted, and breaking the bottle, found a scrap of paper with' the following written qn it i — fSep. 24, 188$. The Bhin Smyrna. All woll, passing Tasmania. Fine day, favorable wind, sailing 10 knots an hour. W. H. P." The scrap was folded inside ft sheet ot a lenf of a Bible. As September 24 1884 is not tp hand yet, this, ieppobably a sell.
The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tougaviro, which left Plymouth on the sth instant, arrived at the Capo of Good Hope on Saturday last. Archdeacon Zillman, of Victoria, a very eloquent preacher who visited Wellington two or throe years ago and J preached at St. Peter's Church, has left the Anglioan Communion and become the minister of a Congregational church m Melbourne. Originally, we learn from an exchange, he was a Wesleyan minister. When he was m Wellington he struck us (Post) as being rather High Church. Sir George Grey has stated to an Aucklaud Star reporter who interviewed him, that the numerical strength o£ his supporters m the new House has been underestimated by the newspapers. The future he says, is shrouded m uncertainty, but he thinks it probable the Ministry will go out. "Armailale" informs us that owing to country agents not forwarding returns, the drawing is postponed until the 15th August, on which date it will come off without fail. The numerous friends of the unfortunate Mr J. M. -milestone, whose awfully sudden death at Napier was recorded their a few days ago, will be glad to learn that the evidence given at the inquest conclusively proved that the fatal shot was the result of accident, m - stead of as at first reported, the act of a suicide. The deceased was specially well-known m Masonic circles. He had taken some of the highest degrees of the craft, and was principally instrumental m forming the first lodge m the i Wairarapa. For several seasons up to about four years ago he was Secretary of the Wairarapa Jockey Club. Auckland the incidental expenses of the Auckland Board of Education amounted to 10 per cent, of the whole vote. Hares are becoming almost a pest m some parts of the Te Awarautu (Wai- . kato) district, and especially about Kihikihi, where they commit considerable ravages m the very gardens on the outskirts of the town; It is currently reported (says the Post) that Major Atkinson is making a desperate effort to bring about an alliance with Mr Ormondj and is willing to resign the Premiership m that gentleman's favour rather than see Sir Julius Yogel attain office. The negotiations so far are understood not to promise much chance of success, and the "feelers" thrown out amongst members as to how such a combination would be regarded have not been received so cordially as it was expected they would be. Mr Ormpnd is probably two shrewd a mnn to be. easily caught. Captain Russell, the newly elected member for Hawke'a Bay, is at present m Wellington.
