LOCAL, AND GEIVERAI,.

■» r— Mr Greenwood's next visit to Pnlmerston will be on Thursday the 24th inst., his consultation rooms being at Walkley's Hotel. - By oar cable commercial news it will be seeu that th® market rate of discount has fallen to 1 per cent., the bank rate being 2 per cent. The inaugural meeting of the Wanganui Industrial Association was held on Thursday. The rules of the Canterbury association were adopted, with slight modification. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington "Waste Land Board, which was to have been held oh Thursday, lapsed for the want of a quorum, the only members who attended being the Acting Commissioner (Mr Marchant), and Mr. Mason. The partnership hitherto existing between Messrs Buller and Gully has been dissolved by mutual consent. Mr Hugh Gully is m future to carry on tho Wellington business of the firm under the old title. A Napier constable did a brave deed recently, and one worthy of recognition as well as all praise. A horse attached to a dray bolted along the street, at a great speed, but the named lost no time m jumping into the dray, and got astride the horse's back, as the reins were hanging down very low. He succeeded m catching the reins, and soon had the animal at a standstill, amid the cheers of the specators.

Thn following notice appears m. the Post :— Notice to the Hutt electors. In my own interests, and not having tlie time at my disposal to canvass the above large district, I deem it necessary to retire from th- contest. Therefore, I now fomally retire m favor of the othei three candidates. I owe no apology to anyone for either running or retiring. Thos. Dwan. I There are evidently some mean thieves on the rampage at present, writes the Napier Telegraph. Last night iv Daltoustreet two legs mutton were taken out of a Bfife, while m another house the safe j was robbed of six pounds of beef. > The road between Napier and Taupo i ia m such a bad condition that, wo (Telegraph) understand, the mail con- : tractor tears he will be compelled to cease running his coach. For many years this road was kept m an excellent state of repair by Armed Constabulary men, but just before winter set m all hands were withdrawn, with the natural consequence that the road is fast becoming impossible for wheel traffic. A Napier paper hears that certain sup- ) porters of Mr Sheehan aro busy making bets on the forthcoming election, and it is reported that a list of the names of those with whom bets have been made is carefully kept with a view to nullify the votes of those people. Wo fail to see m the Corrupt Practices Act any bar to wageriug, but it is held by some lawyers that it would vitiate a vote, so wo advise all those who have bets ou the electious to " cry off." Speaking of the Manawatu contest the Foxton paper has the following : — " Mr Fraser is brought forward by a number of Mr Macarthur's opponents simply out of opposition, and has no chance whatever, as even Mr Macarthur's opponents admit there is no comparison between the two men. Mr Q. W.Ruesell was invited to stand by a considerable number of electors, but refused to do so unless Mr Fraser retired.' This the latter declined to do, and his committee have passed a resolution expressing their confidence m him and pledging themselves to work for him." It would be interesting to know who were the " considerable number of electors" referred to. Glew, the Wellington publican, was found Not Guilty on a charge of perjury. The charge arose out of his repudiation of a signature alleged to be hi 3 attached to a promissory note, which he maintained was a forgery. One witness for the defence was a man named Frederick Harman who deposed that he had recently undergone a term of a mouth's imprisonment. During the term he worked with Watty, who, on ons occasion, said, 'if it laid m his power he would have Glew up where he (Watty) was now." He also mentioned another name which witness could not remember.
