The annexation debate m the New South Wales Legislative Council has been adjourned. The fortification of Korosko and Wadyhalfa is vigorously proceeding m view of the possible advance of the rebels. In the Victorian Legislative Council the resolutions of the Sydney Convention have been adopted unanimously. The Jane Duglas will leave Foxton for Wellington next Saturday at 10 p.m. Sir W. Jervois, Governor of New Zealand, reached Sydney yesterday. '. In the Victorian Legislative Assembly a motion for an address to the Queen re the proposed Federal Council has been adopted unanimously. A similar motion is under discussion m the Tasmanian Legislative Council. Cholera is still spreading on the Continent, and deaths have occurred at a distance of 16 miles from Marseilles. At the Wellington Supreme Court this morning Annie Lynch on a charge of making false representations under the Marriage Act was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisoment. :. : In addition to the meetings previously Advertised, Mr Fraser will address the electors at the school-house, Stoney (jreek on Monday, and Taonui on Tuesday. ; The football match, Palmerston v. Wanganui will not be played until Saturday fortnight, the 25th instant. On Thursday last the dead body of a man was found on the road between Eketahuna and Alfred ton. On enquiry it proved to be that of • a school-master named Anderson, who was on his way from Opaki to take charge of the Alfredton school. He had evidently got too much drink on the road, and died from exposure. An inquest was held at Eketaltuna on Friday, and a verdict returned accordingly. At the" Wellington , Police Court on Monday, Jeremiah Murphy, at one time m holy orders, failed to appear to answer a charge of having; neglected to comply with an order of the Court m respect to the maintenance of his son m the Burnham Industrial Home. The Clerk of the Court proved that over £12 was due, and their 'Worships' ordered a distress warrant to issue. The Emperor of Germany, now m his eighty-eighth year, is not the only old inhabitant. On his hunting trips he f requeetly meets some hale old pensioner who fought m the war of liberation,^ or i inarched against the French at Waterloo. The severe military discipline of Prussia does not seem to shorten the I lives of her subjects. | A correspondent of the Lyttelton Times vouches for the truth of the following curious story : — "A woman married, was deserted, re-married after a | lapse of years, and emigrated along with | her second husband to New Zealand. [She settled iv Canterbury, and has I daughters (now married) by her second husband. Within the last two years a swagger applied at her husband's house, who proved to be the man to whom she had been married years ([ cannot say how many) ago m England. Mr Ballance addressed a Wanganui meeting last night, but the Chronicle report is incomplete, and does not say if Mr Ballance received a vote of confidence. We may confidently assume, however, that such a motion would be carried with acclamation, as Mr Ballance is an able speaker, and at present is very popular m Wauganui. He is looked upon as one of the coming men m the political world. We notice Mr Davis has opened a fruit and pultry shop next the Ready Money Store. A want much felt m this district is thus supplied, as residents can always depend on getting a good and f resh article from Mr Davis' store. Fresh, fruit will always be op hand and, poultry when procurable,
