LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The following appears m the Wellington papers '.-—"Public notice. If Haus Kamussen, who left his ' wife and three children about sevtn years ago, does not jreturn home or answer this advertise- ' ment within one 'month from this date, his wife will marry again. (Signed), A. .BainuHseu. Picton, July Ist, 1884." The following motion was tabled by Mr Sly at the last meeting of the Manawatu Highway Board :— That any Ward indebted to the general account of the Board shall have deducted from its rates a sum equal to 50 percent, of its revenue from all sources until the debt is cleared off, the amount to be computed oh the lrtft two yeara' receipts. No new works to be undertaken m such ward m any one year until the said 50 per cent, has been paid into the bank. ■ . Leave to appeal has been allowed . m the case recently heard at Wellington, whether the posting of placards m the bar of a publi'chouse, announcing that the liquor supplied was adulterated with' water, was sufficient notice under the Adulteration Act. Although the division which defeated the Government took place when^Mr . J, G. Wilson was on his way to Wellington, we observe that his name appears m Hansard as having'paired m favour of the Government. Great apathy is shown by Hearn's supporters m Wellington m the matter of raising Hs stake money, and unless the ainouui is subscribed by the end of next week it is probable the match with Hanlau will fall through. 1 Things must be m rather a bad state m Taranaki. A resident m New Plymouth, m a private letter to a friend, writes as .follows :-— " Business is bad, and what there is done gratuitously— in other words, there is no money m the place, and it is almost a matter of impossibility to get m what is owing." There is on foot, says the Examiner, a movement to have a grand demonstration of the Friendly Societies on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, 9th November. Such a thing would be a red letter day m Woodville, and given fine weather the demonstration would be attended by nearly all the settlei'3 m the district. During the temporary absence of His Excellency the Governor from tho colony the formal Acts for which his signature is necessary will be performed by the Hon. G. M. Watorhouse, M.L.C., as deputy. Hit» Excellency is to return by the mail steamer which is due to* arrive at Auckland on the 22ud inst. We (Chronicle) are pleased to be ahlo to state that Dr S. M. Curl, of Greatford, one of the icost successful wool growers on this coast, has just received information that his wool lias brought the highest price m the English market. The returos show that washed wool realised Is 5d per lb. This should be encouraging to the farmers and graziers on this coast, proving that they can, if they look after their breeds of sheep, get the best price m the London market.
Attention is directed Jto the altered advertisement of the Ready Money Store, m which a number of properties of various descriptions aro advertised for sale and to let. The fuller particulars of the accidental death of the old man Reilly on the Auckland railway are to hand. It appears that the driver saw a man lying on the line, who lifted up his head as the trait; approached and yelled out. The brake was at once put on, but the train could not be stopped untill it had passed over the body of tho unfortunate man. Th«deceased's hip hones were broken t<> pieces, and his legs were almost cut across below the knees ; there was a large hole m the skull above the left eyebrow. On a previous occasion de ceased had lost one of his thumbs and one of his big toes by an accident on the line.
