Secular Concert.

Notwithstanding the wet weather last night, there was a very .fair; attendance at the hall. The Volunteer Band acquitted itself creditably m the overture, and the >.eyeral ladies and gentlemen who took part m the concert were l'ewarcled by frequent encores. The soloists were. M>.sd ames Carty and Hoe and Messrs Kendall, Whibley, Harbott, and Healy. ;Mr T. King m »• The Widow : -M^loqe " wasjnimense, and *Kis selection ipet with" an enthusiastic reception. Mr Jolly's character song, "The Lost Child " was also very goo'l _ indeed, the get -up being 1 yevy .mirth provoking. Mrs Carty, as . accompanyist, contributed greatly to the success of the concert, Mr Scott alsp displaying muviciil abilities of a high orderj as pianist. Messrs Haybit tie's and Stratford's recitations were capitally given. Ahogether the concert may be prouonucod m every ..sense a success, and bad the night been finer there would have been a. very much larger attendance. At the time \of writing we have not learnt the net amount of the proceeds. Nocharge was made for the use of the hall, aixd the Manawatu Standard considerately did the advertising gratis, tnus materially reducing the expenses, and leaving a larger amount/ to be handed over to Mr Partridge, who m another column returns , his ac knowledgeinents to those who ; thus assisted him m a time of misfortune.
