A Steamer on Fire.

Captain Dale reports that he took m a cargo of timber at Kaipara, and left there oh Friday, at ' 7 a.m. yesterday morning, when off the "Wihite Cliffs he found the vessel on Brie m t;he:Bifter part of the hold close to ■ the. . bunkers; He closed ,a11 ; the openings and stood m for land, and at ten o'clock: foimd the ;fire was gaining fast, compelling all hands to leave the engine room, .the engineer reporting it: was ; impossible to .stay kelow% ; . ; Thei oaptafn then;ofljve orders , to clear tlie; deck cargo andiQntjboles; m the hatchway and after part of .the dftck, and delude the. ahip with water. Finding ,the| S,re still 'gaming rapidly he igave orders to have a boat ready to be lowered. At this time the whole of the bulkheads and part of the deck and cargo. were on fire. All hands set to work to ponr water into the hold, and finding the fire ""was being gained on Captain Dale kept away to Waitara, arriving there .about 1.30 p.m. After continued exertions the fire was at length ex- ! tinguished.
