OUR JUSTICES.
At Invercargill the other night, Sir Gkohge Grey said that he would sweep away the whole system of people begging to be made Justices, of tlje Peace. He would only let those who woujcj become Justices of the Peace hold office for a short time, so that if a wrong choice were made, people would be able to get rid of the man. He would not have some men cringing to have a relative made a J.P. This is just as it should be, but unfortunately at the present time it is otherwise, and men often get into the position, through some undue influence and cringing, who are totally unfit for the office. This has come painfully under our notice before to-day ; and. indeed, there could be a good deal of weeding out done with profit among our Justices of the Peace. A local candidate for Parliamentary honours avows his in-
tention of carrying out a thorough cleansing of the Agean stable m this direction.
