BENEFIT SOCIETIES.
Referring; to the r«>cent failure nj the Prudential Mutual Benefit Socirt\ of Victoria, which had a branch m Auckland, the Evening Star of that, place says : — Of all swindle*, those perpetrated by societies trading upon the hu rd -earned money of poor men are the most heartless. The failures of these societies injure providential institutions everywhere by disheartening working men who had begun to lay by for a rainy day. The lesson of this failure is one, howev. r, that should help rather than injure the esfcablishedjOrdersoi Friendly Societies i whose powerful organisations and principles of mutual help area gaurantee to their members of security for the f^ck benefits they promise. While they exist, together with Government benefit in-nrance, we do not see why working men m New Zealand should look abroad for institutions like ihe Victorian Prudential Benefit Society m which lo place their savings.
