Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1884. THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.
We learn with regret that Crs Leahy, McNkil, and Walkeb, have definitely decided not to come forward as candidatesfor the Borough election, shortly to take place. We can but lament their decision, and would urge them to reconsider it and if possible still place their valuable services at the disposal of the ratepayers. The Council can ill afford to lose such members, and their places will be hard to fill. Crs Fkkgdson, Linton, the Mayor, and others of the late Council will, of course, be returned, and the ratepayers will be only too glad to think that m the new Council they will have men m whose tried judgement and integrity full confidence can be placed Unfortunately, owing to certain baneful influences recently at work, the Council, once united to an extent often quoted as a proverb, became divided, and various dissensions arose. We trust that such influences have now ceased to make themselves felt, and that although much bitterness and ill-feeling may thereby have been engendered that m course of time all remembrance of former ill-feeling will have passed away, and that the interests of the Borough will be held paramount. No doubt the division into wards was most ill-advised and was calculated, by the method of its being effected, to annoy the public and disturb the harmony of the Council. However, all that now remains is to make the best of it, and to return the very best men that can be induced to come forward. We appeal to the
ratepayers to sink any personal reelings that have recently been invoked for interested purposes, and to unite toelectgoodmen and true to conduct the affairs of the Borough m the future.
