Despatches to hand fiom the Governor of Dongola state that that province has been pacified, and that an engagement had been fought between the garrison of ! Berber and the rebels, m which thrlatter had been defeated with heavy loss - -, r • j Information has been received from Khartoum that General Gordon continues to- hold out against the besiegers and had been successful m various engagements. Telegrams /from Souakim report that a bod|r of rebels had approached tho town and a fusilade lasting two hours was kept up with them by the garrison, after which the rebels retired. THE CEGE OF BERBER RAISED. COUNTRY NOW TRANQUIL. ' (Received June 4, 0.55 a.m.) Telegrams ft om Berber state* that m consequence of the recent success of the garrison the rebels have raised the ccge and retired from the neighbourhood.
