One boy said lie counted thirty-eight strokes thus inllicLcd ; but it was denied that there were so many. The Magistrate (Mr Robinson) dismissed the case, saying that he could not thiuk it such an excess of severity us would compel him io put defen- . dune m tln» position of a criminal ; but. at the same time, he thought if defendant had fully considered the matter he would not have inflicted such a punishment.
