A Word of Caution.
[Patea Mail.]
The means of exit, m case of/a panic of the public halls should be looked to by the authorities. The urgent necessity was shown at St. James' Hall on Monday night.; During the progress of the entertainment then going on, the fire at Lunberg's cast its reflection into the Hall, and the audience- being stricken with curiosity at once left their seats and rushed for the door. Everything so far went well, but some one with an amazing .amount of discretion cried out that the hall was on fire. The result may be easily imagined. Very few had the presence of mind not to rush helterskelter to the door, which was soon completely blocked ; but fortunately owing to the number of persons m the hall being somewhat small, matters were soon righted. Had the building been crowded, it is quite possible the entertainment would have had a tragic ending.
