Te Kooti
The following letter was forwarded to the Korimako, a Maori paper, by*Renata Kawepo, an important chief in Hawke's Bay : — " This is a proclamation by me, Renata Rawepo regarding the proposed visit of Te Kooti to this district. I object to the appearance of that scoundrel within my boundaries — that is to say, anywhere within the limits of the districts of Hawke's Bay, Wairoa, and Wairarapa. Let not that man be seen within these boundaries or there may be trouble. Mr Bryce alone has become acquainted with this fellow. We, the Maori people, knew him only as the murderer of men, women, and children. The reason for my issuing this notice is that I have received a Tetter from Te Kooti stating that he inteuds shortly to visit me and my people. But I will never couseut to his coining here. I have therefore set out the boundaries of my district, so that h« may not be under any mistake hi this matter. — Uhnata Kawepo. Omahu, May 17th, 1884."
