The Feilding Star is very wroth with the Government on account of its palpable breach of faith re the promised Oroua Valley railway survey for the central route. It says :— " We can hardly find words to express our contempt for the miserably lying and shuffling which the Government has been guilty of m this matter. The Taranaki Herald states that a gentleman from Christchuroh has arrived m New Plymouth, having been appointed by a syndicate at Home to examine certain blocks of land for sale privately, situated about five or six miles from Stratford. If his report is favourable, the settlement of that part of the district by farmers from England will quickly follow. Mr Parkes has succoeded m capturing some half a dozen more hawkes. The statement that Sims Reeves intends to mako a tour through Australia and New Zealand shortly turns out- to | be strictly correct. The great tenor I will travel via America, singing at all the principal cities en route. The exact date he may be expected to arrive at Auckland has not yet been determined, but so soon as he returns to London I, (Posts London correspondent) shall secure an interview and obtain full particulars. The first two Roman CatheHe priests who landed m Melbourne m 1839 were subsequently elevated to the episcopate. They were tUe Right ltev. Patrick Benard Ullathorne, and the Right Uev. Patrick Bonaventure Geoghegan. Dr Ullathorne rules one of the most important dioceßes m England as Bishop of Bir mingham. Dr Geoghegan was consecrated m 1859 as Bishop of Adelaide. Mr Archibald Forbes, the celebrated war correspondent, is at present en-*---gaged, or rather was engaged m the middle of March, m writing a life of General Gordon. Some idea of the working capabilities of Mr Forbes may be formed from the fact that the work, which will be of 250 pages, had to be written within ten days, during the whole of which period, m addition to the life, he was m the Daily News office from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m., writing military matters for that journal. At a meeting of the Salvation Army held at Nelson, it was stated that for the quarter ending 30tu April the receipts iv Nolson had been £444 5s lid, and the expenditure £301 5s Id, or a clear profit of £11 per week since the campaign was oponed on the Ist February, j
