Captain Col beck, who for some lime represented Marsden, left to-day by the Rotomahaua for Wellington, m order to take passage by the : Aorangi for England. Captain Colbeck remain for some time at Home, probably with a view to form a settlement for > e\v Zealand, and will take steps fov the establishment of a woollen manufactory at Auckland. Henry Neale, an old identity, died suddenly to-day whilst walking m his garden. * At a meeting of the newly-formed Mercantile Marine Association, the Hon. E. Mifchelson was elected president. A letter from Victorian Association was read, requesting infoi*mation respecting the Auckland association, and offering to co-operate as far as possible. Afc a meeting of creditors of Mr Hitchen.s, of blood restorer fame, the statement bj' the chairman showed that there was £3000 surplus over liabilities. The first anniversary of the Aueklarid University was celebrated last night when His Excellency the Governor presided. There was a good attendance, and the Governor, Professor Tliomas, and Sir G. M. O'Rovke delivered addresses. Richard Fletcher was killed yesterday hy a lallast train on the Hnmil-ton-Morrinsville railway contract. The Auckland Licensed "Victuallers' Association has beeu m com.munidalion with the Southern associations with a view to an agreement as to a common platform, and a petition will be Jpre*ented to Parliament, «ettiug forth the objections of the trade to the present Licensing Act, and asking, amongst other things, that the electoral rolls of the colony, and not the ratepayers' rolls, should .be u<ed m licensing elections. Captain Ca bio,- of -Waikomaiti, an old identity, aged 80, died recently. ; His mind showed signs of weo,kening. Last Friday he told his attendants he was going to be flogged t>y some per- , son, and he would go into the water, ; so as they could not get at him easily. Laboring under his hallucination, he went and laid down m a creek, immersing the whole of his body except his head, which he rested on a stone. A short time elapsed before he was discovered. When he was taken out of the water he was quite numbed, and he giadually eank through the shock to his system. Christchurcji, May 22. A fire occurred last night by which a seven-roomed house, occupied by John Warden, was destroyed. The insurances amounted to £250. The origin of the tire is unknown. Dtjnediw, May 23. A birth occurred under somewhat peculiar circumstances this morning. The event took place at 5 o'clock in^ Princes-street, opposite the post-office, the mother being on her road to the; hospital at the time. The child is said to be doing well. The mother isj a servant girl, of about 20 years of ago, and came to town from Palmerston last evening. Dr. Martin was pushing at t.he time and rendered as-' sistance, and the woman was after-' wards removed to the hospital.
