To-morrow, being Queen's Birthday, will be a general holiday. Such being the case the Standard will not be published. We are glad to hear that the man who had his had crushed* m Palmerston last week by an accident with a steam engine, is getting on very well m Wanganui. Fortunately, Dr Macintire's services were available and he was promptly m attendance and dressed the crushed limb. After some stitches had been put m and the hand put m splints, the pain, which was intense prior to and during the operation, greatly diminished. Mr Partridge, carter, who sustained a severe loss the other day while fording the Manawatu River m having a very valuable horse drowned, has requested us to state that if it had not been for the timely assistance lent by George Hartley his loss might have been much greater than it is. Hartley he tells us most pluckily took the river and m every possible way endeavoured to save the horse and dray. The rescue of the dray and other horse is due to his manly exertions, voluntarily and willingly given. A special train passed through Palmerston last night conveying the Minister of Public Works, his secretary, and others. The train was m charge of the District Manager. The lost dog, advertised for by the Stoney Creek settler m last issue, is now m the possession of Mr Astbuiy, on the Awahuri Roard, who will hand it over on application. This is another proof of the efficacy of advertising. We are requested to state that the " holiness tickets" issued by the Salvation Army can be obtained by Christains of any denomination who have proved the sincerity of their profession. We remind our readers that the English mail via 'Frisco will close this evening at 7.30 p.m. The Volunteers will fire the usual feu dejoie m the Square to-rnorrow,not having received aivy orders as yet to the contrary. The Premier was also a passenger by special last night. We learn that the reason of Mr Linton's resignation is his having taken over a borough lease, which would render him ineligible. He intends on his return to deal with it m another way, and will be a candidate at the election of Councillors for one of the new wards. The ratepayers will be glad toleatn that his servicag will be still at their disposal m connection with municipal affairs. Several racers arrived by the mid-day train to-day. There was a large attendance at Mr Snelson's rooms this afternoon.

We believe it is decided to place sliding doors on the side of the goods shed. By latest accounts the wool market continues firm. Sir W. Fox has now completed his m the West Coast Commission, and will labors proceed to England eaily hext month. We trust some member will ask the cost to the Colony of this wonderful report that has taken Sir William so long to compile. It is a pity he did not defer his departure till after Parliament. At the time of writing the weather is very promising for the Winter Race Meeting, to take place to-morrow, which it is anticipated will be a complet success. Mr Walton had a letter from Mr Linton last night. He was just starting for Western Australia. He was much better for his journey. Mr Chamberlain was also improved m health, and was going to pass the winter In Sydney. Mr Ellery Gilbert, pianoforte tuner, has arrived m Palruerston and will reniain some days.
