(united peess association.) Christchurch, May 22. The Springfield Colliery Company last week finished boi'ing operations with the diamond drill. They passed through four workable seams of coal varying from 3ft to s£ft m thickness.
"Wellington, May 22. The writs at suit of George Thorne, junr., against the Commissioner of Insurance were served out this morning. The exact amount is £4000 for breach of contract, und £409 for commission alleged to be due. Mr E. Shaw, who is acting for the plaintiff, has retained the services of Sir Frederick Whitaker, of Auckland, and James Smith, of Dunedin. A man, name unknown, has been washed from his horse while crossing the Tuki Tuki River at Putangata, and drowned.
