AFFAIRS IN SOUDAN. WARLIKE PREPARATIONS. (by electric telegraph- copy kight) (KKDTEk'S TKI.EtiKANi*.) Cairo, May 22. The rumours that the British Government are making preparation for the dispatch of an expedition into Soudan has gained credence here, and it is believed that a strong military force will be conveyed by steamers as far as Assouan, where the first interruption to the free navigation of the rivet" Nile occurs. The officers attached to the British war vessels now stationed m Egyptian waters are already engaged m equipping steamers suitable for river navigation, and several vessels are being fitted m a manner suitable for the conveyance of troops to Assouan. London, May 21. The Pall Mali Gazette to-day states that the Government has virtually decided to despatch an expedition to Khartoum unless General Gordon succeeds m escaping. The same journal adds that the force will consist of 10,000 men under the command of Sir Garnet Wolsley and that the expedition will proceed to Khartoum via Suakim and Berber.
