New Guinea.
The Cook town Courier gives tlie following account of the Age .exploring party: -"The steamer Woosung a r rived hers recently, and amongst her passengers were the members of the new exploring party sent out by the 'Melbourne Age, bound for Thursday Island. The party consisted of six persons — the leader, Captain John Strachan; Messrs D. B. Walker, reporter; Charles Stewart, naturalist; St. Just <le B. Mackay, botanist, photographer, and general correspondent; William Scott, miuer; and James K>)Ty, seaman. Mr Mackay, however, left the party at Cook town, owing, he alleges, to a serious assault made upon him by Captain Strachan, -who threatened to shoot li.im when he reached New Guinea. The intention of the leader is to take his parly, with nearly two tons of goods, m an open whaleboat, 26ft long, from Thursday Island to the Am Islands along tlie New Guinea coast. The party will then proceed to the mainland of New Guinea, and on landing blow up the boat, and start across the island m a north-easterly direction. The boat was brought from Melbourne on board the Woosung, and way accomplish the passage, hut very grave fears are entertained as to the success of the expedition by men -who have had no experience of the New Guinea coast, and the navigation, thereof."
