Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY. ) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 1884. WATER SUPPLY.
Our readers will learn with much satisfaction that a letter was read at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, from the member for the district, to the effect, that m response to a representation recently made by the Council, the Minister for Lands has given directions to reserve from alienation the sources of the Tiritea stream, Fitzherbert Block, to secure a water supply for the Borough of Palmerston North. As the Mayor observed this is a matter for general congratulation, and can be placed on record as something achieved for the district by our present member. The Council has acted wisely m securing perhaps the only source of water supply that is available, and the official intimation is a satisfactory guarantee that no obstacle will be placed m the way of Palmerston at some future time securing an abundant supply of pure water for the use of its inhabitants. We consider the official promise made a most important step m the desired direction, and we congratulate the Council andcommunity generally on the concession applied for, and so readily granted.
