The next metting of the Borough Council will be on the 30th inst., at 7 p.m. which will be the last meeting of the present council. Mr H. Graff having given notice of the termination of his contract for lighting the Public Hall it was resolved last night to invite applications for the office. The Volunteers will find date of next inspection parade elsewhere announced. Mr Armstrong's claim for £71 9s for commission on drainage expenditure was held over till next meeting, April 30, when it will be lookod into. A grand sacred concert will be given m the Foresters' Hall on Thursday 29tli inst at 7.30 p.m., m aid of the funds of the Wesleyan Trust Fund. C. Whitehead notifies m this issue his withdrawal from the bakers' tariff and is selling bread at three-pence per 21b loaf. The petition for the laying off Rangi-tikei-street through tne Square to the Railway Station was not dealt with last night, it being thought better to defer its consideration until the new Council had been elected. Mr Allingham informs us he has not seen any town so prosperous as Palmer--Bton while m Australia, although he travelled a good deal over that contenent. In the large towns, Sydney especially, ho says it is no uncommon thing to be stuck up'by numbers of strong able-bodied men appealing for alms.
