Borough Council.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.
I Present : The Mayor, Crs Perkins, Ferguson, Walker, Mowleni, West, McNeil and King. CorrespondenceGovernment Offices. Wellington, May 14. Str, — I have the honor to inform }ou that your letter of the 12th inst., respecting sections 4 and 5, Palmerston North, has been received here, and that it will be placed before the Premier as soon as he return* to Wellington. — E. Fox. Prom General Survey office, re survey of road lines to connect with Manga tainoko Block. From Mr "Walter Johnston, M.H. R., re reserving from alienation sources of Tiritea stream for future water supply. Reports. The Foreman of Works reported as follows re works m progress : — I have done about 18 chaius of metalling m North-street, and one man has cleared out 40 chains of water-table, same street, one side of the road. It is very slow work for one horse and cart on account of the distance. There are 22 chaius more to do. lam causing a drain to be dug m College-street to have sufficient stuff to form 12 feet wide of road. We have clone about 10 chains of drain and toad, and T have had about 55 chains of drain cleaned out the south side of Foxton Line from West-street to the Kawau creek. It is all right at the present, but as soon as the wet weather sets m there is no fall on account of the water m the Kawau backing the water up m this drain. There must be something done to the Botanical drain or tho Kawau, for the outlet. Of course what has been done to the Botanical Road drain is useless unles the other part is completed ; and I ■would please draw your attention to College-street drain. Now the water from College - street turns down Cook-street, and then down Ferguson-street* and then down Botanical .Road, and then down Foxton Road. So if this drain is cut right through College-street into Botanical Road drain, it would save all these turns, it would be one straight course. And I j would call your attention to some of the main roads. You will fiud as soon as the wet weather sets m that the roads will be m a very b.ul state. There is a piece of road near the Cemetery wants something doing to very bad before winter seta m. The sides want picking down to allow the water to run off and metalling; and I would point out a culvert which wants to be done something to, the one m Fifczherbert street drain; ie should be made the whole width of the road and filled m with stripping, as the cattle are doing damage to the drain and being dangerous as well. The approach the south side of the Manawatu Bridge is giving away. I shall have to do something to it at once, and also some of the planks are decaying m the decking of the Bridge. There are a great many more things I could point out, but I know we would not be able to do them all, so I shall push on with the work as well as I can. I have inspected Mortensen's contract and find that the work has been done as well ar possible, but I find that the speci fications had been altered, that is to omit 12 chains of road and drains m | Featherston-street, also two chains of similar work m Kairanga Road; also two 18 feet culverts, btit I think thai the drain m Featherston street should be cut to the Kawau creek so as to hare an outlet, but of course ihe contractor lias nothing to do with, that now, as the specification has been altered. The Inspector of Nusances. reported as follows : — I have visited most of the places this end of the town, and find so*ne of them very filthy. I find that to do my duty I should have to lose a great deal of time. I have given notice to a great many, but I find that some of them have not taken auy notice as yet. For instance, at the back of Mr George's butcher shop, is very filthy, but nothing done as yet ; also on Mr Nathan's property, Broad-street. I gave him notice to have an old closet emptied and filled with soil or clay m eight days, but nothing has been done as yet, but I shall see whether they intend to do do anything to them or not. The refuse pit should be done something to, as it is very bad the way it is left. I think that there should be lime us-erl, or covered over well with soil, or the pit should be removed further away fioni the main roads. 1 ha\e been informed by Cr "Walker that there was a nuisauce existing on property of Mr Montague m Taonui-street, and I have inspected same and find that there is nothing whatever to cause any complaint. I believe that Mr Montague has been burning- i*ubbUh which he gathers from different places m town, time I believe is ihe] only complaint, but X sso nothing else but ashes. He has two pigs but they are going to do away with them at once, although they are kept very clean. Mr Haine's has made the complaint to Cr Walker and Of Walker informed me of it. So I called next door to Mr Kalf, and asked him whether he had ever any complaint to make, and he tells me that he has not. I had visited the place about three weeks ago and then I could find nothing to complain of, so I hope that if there are any more complaints made that I shall be able to have some one from the council to go with me and inspect the place for satisfaction. I had given notice to Mr George's butcher shop, Square, to have his back yard seen to aud cleaned. This was m April 15, '>ut nothing has been done yet and the place is very filthy. Mr Nathan's, Broad street, has seen to his and had the nuisance removed. Also the Government closet has been attended to an many others that 1 had given notice to. Poundkeeper's Rsport. Petition We the undersigned ratepayers respectfully request that the road on the plan of the Borough viz. from the Railway station to the extremity of the Rangitikei Line be re- opened for general coach traffic. The meeting then adjourned.
