Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY. ) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. TUESDAY, MAY 20, 1884. YOUNG MEN 'S CLUB.
We are glad to see the Rev. Mr Copi'lNgeii making an earnest effort to inuagurate a Young Men's Club and Institute, and trust the meeting convened for this evening will be numerously attended by those m whose interests chiefly the movement has been started, and also that the after results may prove satisfactory and will more than realize the hopes and anticipations of its promoter. One of our Southern contemporaries, referring to the necessity for the establishment of a similar institution^ m its neighbourhood, remarks that it is a pity that amongst some of its philantrophic townsmen there is none found to make an attempt to start a Club or something of the kind to provide lawful and healthful amusement for the youth of the place. That some such establishment is wanted there can be no reasonable doubt. It is desirable that there should be counter attractions to the street. Everyone has not a comfortable home, and even where such is the case, human nature is so strangely constituted that it invariably requires a change of relaxation to that which is afforded by the home fireside. Such an institution as" a club could be made the means of providing rational and intellectual amusement. Occasional lectures on interesting subjects might be given and debates held. What is chiefly needed, however, m these matters is for them to get into good hands, and we believe that under the earnqst and practical guidance of Mr
Cori'ixciai, the Club and Institute will be successfully launched and will prove a great boon to the community. Our young men should avail themselves of the privilege of membership, and they may depend upon it the advantage they will derive will be apparent from the start, and may prove of inestimable service m afcer life. We trust Mr (Joppingeii's praiseworthy efforts m this direction will be seconded and countenanced m every possible way, and that the new Club and Institute will become m course of time one of the most attractive and beneficial social institutions m the district. We cordially wish the movement all success.
