Wellington paper has the following: — " Report says that Mr Ballance is meditating a change — that he will abandon politics and newspaper work and become instead, a freethought lecturer — a colonial Bradlaugh. He has been president of the Wauganui Freethought Association. With practice, he would soon have a list of very effective lectures, and would probably achieve success." Information was receired by the Wellington police on Friday night that the girl Fanny Thalford, who has been missing from Belrnont since Tuesday last, was found at Thompson's Clearing, Pahautanui,, at 1 p.m. The two dogs I she took away wore with her, and the girl is said to have been naked and covered with mud, presenting, altogether, a most pitiable spectacle. Tho Tauranga Cheese Company's work have been fairly-busy during the season, and have used 60 gallons of milk per day, the produce being 153 cheeses, which are to bo sold when old enough. A meeting of creditors m the estate of S. J. Gamnian is called by the Deputy Assignee to be held m the Court House, Palmerston, to-morrow at 11 o'clock. As a proposal of a very important nature will be brought forward, claimants m the estate should make it their bnsineßs to attend. A London journal, referring to Mr Gladstone, says : — " He, no doubt, thinks himself quite blameless for what has occurred m the Soudan, but, nnlessthe faith which he is believed to live m is a lie, the time is not far distant when he will be better informed on that point." The Roman Catholic body m Woodville are now proceeding with the erection of their chapel on the Napier road, and we understand they are meeting with liberal support from the general public m providing funds for the work. One of the oldest patients m the Wellington District Hospital died last Friday night, namely, Patrick Kelly. He had been an inmate of the Hospital for fifteen years, and has no relatives m the province. At one time he was on the Thames Goldfield, and will be well remembered there. According to the Woodville paper, a Palmerston draper intends opening a branch m Woodville shortly. . At the Salvation Army meeting on Friday night one of the officers requested any Christians present to rise and acknowledge their faith, when one of the audience stood up and stated he believed he was a Christian but that the proceedings he had witnessed he felt sure were calculated to do far more harm than good to Christianity The adjourned special annual meeting of the Borough Council will be held tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock. The Marten paper says Messrs Stevens and Gorton's sale at Awahuri on Friday was one of the best held m the district for some time as regards the number of stock quitted. Of course the prices were somewhat low. There being a rumonr m town that Colonel McDonnell had received news by a native from Tuhua stating that payable gold had been struck, we(Herald) are m a position to state that no such news has arrived. The Bulls correspondent of the Feilding Star says the doctor holds out but faint hopes of Mrs Scott's recovery, who was injured last Saturday.
