TESTIMONIAL. TO CONSTABLE GILLESPIE.
I The following the copy of the testimonial which is intended for presentation to Constable G-illespie, on the occasion of his removal from Palmerslon, and which will be forwauled to him within the next few days. It is a tribute to merit such as but few public officials have hitherto sncceeded m obtaining, especially m a small community like this. It reads as follows : — TO CONSTABLE JOHtf GILLESPIE. We, the undersigned inhabitants of Palnierston North, having leaint that yon are about to be removed from this Borough to that of Feilding, beg to testify to the able and impartial manner m which you have discharged your duties as Police Constable m this, district for the past seven years and upwards. We regret that youv removal was obtained through misrepresentation. The Borough' loses m you a steady and careful dqhu, a courteous and efficient officer; and we feel sure that to whatever station you are removed you will continue to act faithfully m the discharge of your duties. Keeling, Town Clerk I E. Turner, Bank Manager j T. H. Caverhill, Bank Manager. j and about two hundred other names; of residents of the town ;and. country! <Hstrictp. It is believed that had uj systematic canvass been made, little, short of a thousand namea could have been procured, so universal is the estimation m which Constable Gillcsj pie is held, by all classes, and so intense the indignation at the mannet pi' his removal. ..-..:' We remind our readers that Mr John Stevens will address his constituents at the Foresters' Hall, Marton, this evening, at 7.30 o'clock. ; Before Messrs Snelson and Waldegrave Esqs., J.P's., to-day, Ann Russell, an old offender, was dealt with on charges of drunkenness and vagrancy, being fined 10s for the first offence and being sentenced to a month on the second. Two men were also fined. £1 and costs for fighting m Fitzherbert- , street on Sunday. The woman Ann Russell brought before the Court this morning had twelve previous convictions recorded against her, six during last year, with sentences ranging from 7 days to one month. The surveyors working on the Ranges under instruction from the Wellington • Manawatu Railway Company have found excellent gradients on all the spurs, proving that the making of roads will be a work of no engineering difficulty worth speaking of. It is to be hoped some of these easily constructed routes will be made available for rendering accessible the Mangutinoko Block, the outlet for which should be Palnierston, and the capabilities of which are known to be such as to justify the matter receiving special consideration. We learn that a section near the Public Hall, portion of the church property, has been leased to Messrs Hankins and Baker for building purposes. Pastor Graustad is to lecture to-night at the Public Hall on Spiritualism and Materialism. The Mayor has acceded to a request that lie should preside. Mr G-. M. Snelson is erecting two nice cottages near the Public Hall fronting Fitzherbert-Street, and adjacent to his storage depot. The f famowork of both was up to-nay. We learn that one is already let to Mr Beck, and the other to Mr Larcomb. - It is rumoi.red that a member of the locfll Borough Council last evening publicly acknowledged his conversion through the instrumentality of the Salvation Army. If rumour speaks truly, and m this case it is well founded, (says our Woodville contemporary) there is to be quite an influx of new business places m Woodville. A gentleman who has been ' on a visit here talks of opening a store on a section which he has purchased near Messrs Grinlinton and Lidholm's, and another butchery is about to be opened. . . Edward P. Weston on. March 15 completed his task of walking five thousand miles m one hundred consecutive days, Sundays excepted. On the conclusion of his labors he was enthuiastically congratulated by a very large company, and Dr. B. W. Richardson and other medical men insisted on the value of the feat m connection with total abstinence from intoxicating drinks. j A Gospel Hall is being ereotedin MainStreet. ! On dit (says the Marton paper) that an important change m the well-known auctioneering and commision agency firm of Messrs Stevens & Gorton has been made, the senior partner having retired from active participation m the business, and been succeeded by a gentleman at present managing a bank m Rangitikei. It is said, however, that the old title o£ the firm will be maintained. The hour of Pastor Gaustad's meeting to-night is 7.30 o'clock. , We learn that Mr James Miller has purchased Mr Dinsdale's butchery business, the sale having b«en negotiated by Mr R. Leigh. An Auckland Telegram states that Barry and McDowell state there is no doubt rich reefing districts exist m Tuhua.
