A Meritorious Proposal.
•. A movement., is on .foot to a testimonial to Coustable Gillespie, now nnder orders to leave for Feildirig, as « ; tribute of public appreciation ot his services while m charge of this district during the last seven, years. \ In order to afford everyone an opportunity of contributing 1 , and so that tihe movement may assume as popular a form" as possible, it is proposed .to limit the a ; mount of individual subscrijitionsto one shilling. ... . A« tJ>e rules of the service prohibit a. cpiistable being the recipient of money, tlie contribution of the public, it, is proposed to hand over the amount to Mti, jGjillespio, on behalf of her hus,.band.... We -don't .suppose there is a r,esident .of the whole district who will not gladly avail himself of the •opportunity thus afforded of. testifying to the high appreciation m which Constable Gillespie is heJ/J, by all classes of the public, who sympathise w^h him and hisfanjjlyin the cruel and unwarrantable persecution of which they have eon the victims, throiigh a malicious and withal' absolutely untruthful report having been sent to headquarters by a resident of the place. Coustable GKillespie has ever fulfilled his duty impartially, and can defy his worst enomy to point to one instance of neglect of duty, or of favouritism shewn to any. This the public at large admit, whepce tlie unanimous desire to place on record the satisfactory manner m which his official services have been discharged, and the general regret manifested at his departure, together with a sense of public feeling of the unworthy means which have been had recourse to m order to efiect his removal from Palmerston.
