FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1884. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Additions have been made to Messrs Stevens and Gorton's catalogue for their next Feilding sale. Tho farm advertised for sale by Mr W. Sanire, Stoney Creek, can be leased with purchasing clause. The shipments of wool from the Wellington Provincial District for the six months ending 31st March, exceed those of the corresponding period of 1632-3 by over 4000 bales. Horsewhipping m Wellington is becomming quite popular. From a local paper we learn that the second horsewhipping exhibition of the week occurred on Tuesday at an hotel on Lambtonsquay. One of the barniflida employed at this pirtieun lur hotel, considering herself insulted by a person who lodges m the house, resented his espionage very effectively by horsewhifiping hiui.. The fracus, while it lasted, was quite sensational, and created a small commotion m the neighborhood. A London paper says : — The age of romance ciin scarcely be said to have de« parted when four boys of fourteen or fifteen years of age can be found willing to undertake a voyage from blackfriars to Australia man open boat. They started on Boxing Day, and got as far as Greenwich, when they lost their way m a hehvy fog, tind were picked np by the police galley. Their provisions for the voyage consisted of a bag of biscuits, candles, matches, a revolver, powder and bullets, a song book, and copies of the " Boya' World." i")n one of them was found a letter addressed to his parents, ready for posting, telling them that he and Jus corns panions were off on a voyage to Australia, Not content with starving out the sheep on the hills (sajs the Marlborough Express), overrunning the farmer?' crops on the lint, and eating off the flowers m the town gardens, \he rabbits have turned their attention to the graves m the eeme* tery. [t is painful, not to say disgusting, to see the rabbit -holes actually m the graves ; nnd the thoughts which must arise m the minds of relatives of the deceased cannot be particularly oleasant. It might be a desirable thing for the cetnetary trustees to erect a rabbit-proof fence, sunk several feet beneath the ground, so as to keep Mr Bunny rrom trespassing where he is least of all wanted.

Mr Cavanaub, a purchaser of hor.-es for India, whs m Mnalerton to-day (says the Daily of Wednesday). He informs us that he has travelled troin WHiiganui to this town without being ible to pick uo a single horse suitable for his require" f nmts. ] There was a sensational occurrence at Melton recently, writes The World, which recalled tho mad freaks of the famous Jack Mytton — with this difference, that tho latter were premeditated, and the other accidental. Count Kinsky, the owner of Zoedone, on whom he won the Liverpool Steeplechase last year, drove nn old hunter m a buggy to innke a call m the neighborhood of Melton. On his servant getting down to open the gate leid* ing to the bouse,' the horse backed towards a ditch at the roadside, and on being struck with the whip to ' straighten' him, he rushed at the opposite hedge, took it m his stride, and lande i scfely m the field beyond, without injuring the buggy or unshipping Count Kinsky, who describes the sensation us " rather peculiar." It was a marvellous escape under any circumstances. A story is told of a provincial theatre m Treland where Macready was personating Virginius. In preparing for the scene m which the body of Dentatus is brought on the stage, the manager called to (he Irish attendant — his property man— tor the bier. Pat responded to the call at once, And soon returned with a full, foaming pot of ale, but was received with a string of anathe--mas for his confounded stupidity, '• The bier, you blockhead !" thundered the manager. " And bu re isn't it here 1" ex* j claimed P«t, presenting the highly* polished quart measure. " Not that, you stupid fellow. I mean the barrow for Qentatua." "Then why ddn't you call things by their right name V snid Pat. " Who would imagine for a moment yon meant the barrow when you call for beer ? ' A special notice from Dr Sinclair will be found elsewhere. The Wanganui Herald learns that a newspaper plant has been ordered with the objeu of starting a newspaper at Bulls. The Feildmg Star concluding a second rejoinder to the other Palmerston paper, observes ;— ' We would reply to a fair and manly attack if couched m decen language, but we must decline to enter the lists with one who has at his command, and uses, the low vituperative powers of a cogtermonger.' It is rumoured that certain changes are to be made at an early date m regard to the clerks of the R.M. Court at Feilding. Poxton, and other places. The nature of the alterations has not transpired. One of the novelties introduced at a country race meeting m Victoria lately Was a three-mile barebacked hurdle race. The winner was ridden by the youngest Watson, a son of the V.R.O. starter. There was a meeting of the Road Board to-day, when the rate of |d m the £ was formally struck. Mr 0. S. Gatton, "ho has been indisposed js, we are glad to learn, considerably better. A supply of Mr Harris' Sandon chaff, will always be on sale at Mr Suelson's mart during the winter months. Some of the restless souls in' this dia» trict, (says the Hawera Star) are anxious for a little excitement, and are considering the advisability of inviting Sir Julius Vopel to contest the ttgmont seat with Major Atkinson, Cure for Indigestion. — Baxter's Compound Quinine Pills, used according to the directions, have pro red a certain and speedy cure for indigestion, bilious and liver complaints wind m the stomach and bowels, nervous debility, &c. Their ob ject is the removal of debility and derangement by assisting nature, and imparting tone and power to the 3yntem. — To be had of all chemists and storekeepers m bo;ce9, Is l£d and 2s 9d each, or post free on receipt of 19 or 44 stamps. — J. Baxter. Pharmaceutical Chemist, 21, Victoria* 3Sreet, Christchurch.
