Plague of Locusts.
We learn fron),,a recent exchange that there has been a fearful locust plague m. North .Queensland. On the Herbert River they eaten down 400 acres of cane at one plantation, and- all the hands : employed $her<> fwfere m consequence paid off." It is thought that cane-growing on the river will be quite stopped temporarily by the plague, far m the case of the Victoria, property there will' be no cantfleft toWc&h this season. One writer says : — " Lnever saw anything Ukt, At j the locusts darken the air when onlhewing.|Tht».ycatne to my section yesterday, and ate up all the couch grass m half a day. The long grass also got a great « cuttingnp,' aud'where couch gra^ lias been if is Sow quite brown. At .Victoria the men were employed burying the insects'in trenches, and everything that could be done was done, but without avail.
