Frightful Consequences of Drink. (Wanganui Chronicle.) A death under vory shocking circumstances wss iep&rted to the police yesterday. It appears that a man named Brown- who was always known to be fond, of drink, received from Home a few months ago the sum of £500. On the receipt of the money he and his wife at once commenced a persistent course of heavy drinking, and finally got into a thoroughly besotted state from which they made no efforts to extricate themselves. They, daily consumed enormous quantities of beer, which appears to have been latterly what they principally lived on. Test terday between two and three o'clock Mr Buck, n cooper, called at Brown's cottage, and having knocked and received no answer, opened the door and went m. He found Brown lying dead on the floor of the bedroom, and his wife on the bed m a state of mad drunkenness, and unconscious of the miserable fate which had overtaken her husband; The rooms were m a state of filth which beggars description. Mr Buck immediately gave information to the police, who had the woman removed to the Hospital. This morningah inquest will be held on the body of Brown, when air the hideous particulars of the case will be brought out. 1 Laler. An inquest was held to-day into the death of James Brown, who was found dead m his house yesterday. A verdict was returned that deaih was caused by apoplexy, brought on by excessive drinking. An account of beer was produoe4 showing that m two mpnths \oo gallons of beer had been delivered to him.
