THE FALL OF SINKAT.
»' — ■ Tewfik Bey, the commander of the garrison of Sinkat, which lias just fallen to the rebels, is described as a man of indomitable spirit and lesource— very different from the vast majority of Egyptian officers. Tins, indeed, is evident from the heroic manner m which he and his men have held out so long and died so bravely at the last. As far back as 27ih Decembei, when appealing for reinforcements, Tewfic slated that, existing upon strict rations, the garrison coald hold out till 23rd January. As a matter of fact, they held out a fortnight longer, s,o that it is not surprising to learn that they wore reduced tb' starvation. The Mahdi's force round Sinkat was estimated at about 5000 men.
