THE SALVATION ARMY.

[Southern Exchange.] A contingent of the Salvation Army has made a raid upon Balclutha. A number of captains and other officers, chiefly of the female persuasion, have commenced operations. They may descend upon Milton next we fear. This prospect is not cheering. Our larrikins have for a long time past bsen upon their best behaviour — m fact, the youths of Milton have been conducting themselves so remarkably well that it would be difficult to find a genuine larrikin now. But if these " troublers of Israel " turn up, farewell peace and quietness. We shall most likely get a taste of what the Oamaruvians have lately suffered from ; the Army will stimulate our youth into mischievous pranks again, so that the peace of the town will be destroyed for a long time to come. According to the Oamaru Mail, the result of the Salvation Army performances m Oamaru has resulted m a majority of the police force having to be told otf for special duty m connection with their " religious " services. Our contemporary writes : — "The * Captain,' during- the course of last night's meeting, declared that ho was not going to remove from the hall people whose presence and behaviour were distasteful to him, and added that the polico were paid to do his dirty work. To say the least of it, this remark came with an ill-grace from the local head of an organisation which claims that its special mission is to preach unto all men love, peace, and goodwill, but whose presence m the town has doubled the work of the police and made their positions decidedly unenviable."
